Profile
A Region of National Importance.
The periods of the Great Gold Rushes saw the congregation of adventurers
from many different nations and cultures. Many stayed and were the founders
of the beautiful cities and charming villages that dot the landscape.
Castlemaine is one of the chief towns whose goldfields yielded the 19th
century boom, and there are many grand buildings which still stand as
monuments to this rich and colourful past.
An array of historic hamlets, mining relics, cottages and gracious homes
now blend with or house some of the countries finest galleries, restaurants,
museums and gardens to offer a rewarding experience for every visitor
to our region.
Maldon is a town steeped in history, The National Trust declared it Australias
first Notable Town in 1966. It was once among the worlds
richest gold bearing quartz reefs, attracting a population which built
grand houses and a busy commercial centre.
The towns heritage is still the major attraction for visitors. It offers
restored mine sites, gold mining relics, a tour into Carmans Tunnel,
appealing architecture and some of the best antique and speciality shops
in Victoria. You can ride on the Castlemaine-Maldon Tourist Railway, take
bushwalks and scenic drives, boat and fish in nearby Lake Cairn Curran.
